Incredibly ignorant video.
There is a plethora of scientific data to support juicing as a healthy part our diet. The Lancet or New England Journal of Medicine isn’t likely to publish the data. Those are pharma publishing’s, bought and paid for.
This gives obese people a sign to keep eating fast food and remain depressed until their early death.
Makes me question all the videos from this guy.
Well…as a pediatrician i recommend this man do a little more research. Waste absolutely can build up in the large intestine. It’s called constipation. Toxins absolutely can be reabsorbed from poop in the gut—eg babies reabsorb bilirubin from their stool when it sits in the colon so we feed jaundiced babies vigilantly them to make them poop.
For constipation, the standard of care is to induce “diarrhea” to clear out the gut. We use Miralax to increase the osmolarity in the gut, which draws water into the gut, softens the stool and allows the stool to be pooped out. Juice can act as Miralax because it similarly increases osmolarity in the large intestine—“toddlers diarrhea” is a known entity where toddlers have diarrhea from too much juice.
Gut transit time is not a fixed number—if you don’t eat enough fiber and drink enough water you are increasing your likelihood of constipation and poop can sit in there for at least several days. The longer poop sits in the gut, the harder it gets and it can lead to distention and lack of proper muscle tone. Poop can get so hard that as NEW stool is formed behind it, new softer stool LEAKS around the OLD hard poop—so who knows how long poop can sit in there if constipation is not addressed. Some kids are admitted to the hospital to get Miralax through an NG tube because they have impacted stool and just they can not pass it without serious doses of stool softeners.
SO back to juice “fasts:” Fresh juices certainly have a lot of benefits eg the antioxidants—and the scientific evidence for antioxidants is well established. it is good to not overdo high fructose fruits but stick with those that have a lower glycemic index and add veggies. and if your caloric intake is low enough you may reap the myriad benefits of intermittent fasting IF (eg one method of IF is the 5:2 diet: “consume 500–600 calories on 2 non-consecutive days of the week, but eat normally the other 5 days.” See health line article on IF with references).
But importantly not all juice “fasts” are fasts—it’s only a fast if your body is receiving less than a certain amount of calories.
So PROS of a juice “fast” are more antioxidants for a few days, maybe you will soften up some retained poop and clear your gut out, and possibly the benefits of intermittent fasting
Big picture, we need fiber (juice is low in fiber) and we should have a consistent intake of antioxidants, fiber, lean proteins, healthy fats high in omega 3, and probiotics (either from fermented food or supplements).
It’s NOT as this simplistic as he presents it to be and there are many errors in his explanation of digestion. God Bless and educate yourself for yourself.
I think there are enough testimonials of people curing chronic diseases for it to be interesting at least, and you make a couple of assertions in your video which don’t hold up to the "scientific" tone implied.
If you’re drinking loads of juice every day, you’re mostly drinking loads of water. Why would you loose water weight? Why do people consistently drop inches off of their abdomens and hips (where there is relatively little muscle) if it is coming from the glycogen stores in their muscles?
Can you honestly watch this documentary, and say that the people in it do not, all, without a single doubt, look massively more healthy by the end? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aaxa7rxEbyk
I don’t know if you wanted to distinguish between people doing a "juice fast" and some expensive products sold as a "cleanse" (which I’d personally be against as the whole idea of juicing is taking in FRESH unprocessed produce) – but your "scientific" critique seems over-simplified, narrow minded and just inaccurate, to be honest.
Don’t worry everyone!!! He has obviously never cleansed before- based on the filth he is speaking. We all know the Colon videos made by Kangen Water on YouTube . We CLEARLY see that food gets stuck to our colons. He says "healthy colons" but most 1st world nations are constipated, dehydrated, overweight, malnourished, and have high fat, cholesterol rich, massive sugar, dairy , meat and other mucus causing foods. I hope nobody took this seriously. It takes a person to do a thing before they can speak on it. I have a Green Stream playlist that I suggest those who want real knowledge watch
This is why you don’t take medical advice from strangers on YouTube tryna sell you herbs & spices coughs *Dr Sebi Lyin scammin ass* 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤣🤣🤣 I cant believe we brung medical science this far along that idiots feel some hippie can tell them how to keep their body at tip top shape better than a person who spent hundreds of thousands dollars & years of their time educating themselves on how to treat & maintain the human body 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ how tf lol
HEY DONT COMMENT UNTILL YOU TRY IT … IT WOULD BE FOOLISH TO DO SO … THERE ARE MANY EXAMPLES / ANALAGIES THAT ILLUSTRATE THAT . LIKE EXPLAINING MOUNTAIN CLIMBING, SWIMMING IE ANY ACTION WITHOUT FIRST DOING IT … NO OFFENCE INTENDED
In my own experience, juicing gives your body "some" nutrients without the heavy digestion process so your damaged gut can heal. I had a damaged gut from drinking bad water – almost killed me.
Juicing for 10 days gave me a fighting chance.
Wrong. Due to the Standard American Diet, the average American may carry several lbs of toxins in the form of mucous that stick to the walls of our gastrointestinal sytem and other organs. It just boggles my mind that people really think we can eat the way we do (burgers, pasta, fried foods) our entire lives and not give it a break every once in a while. Like bruh… Then you’re all surprised when the poison we eat gets reborn in our bodies as cancer. People don’t juice fast because the juice ITSELF will cleanse your system. People juice fast so they can give their bodies a break and allow their organs to REST and maintain our organs health so that they can continue to efficiently cleanse our bodies the way they are supposed to. No one has every claimed that juicing is supposed to kick our organs into "overdrive mode" or that "the body’s human plumbing system is like one that you find in an old house". People need to start facing the facts and STOP justifying their lack of health.
This wreaks of false information. Clearly, you’re uneducated with the actual scientific literature on how fasting is amazing (and totally natural) and how the toxic load they refer to is from the industrialization of civilization that we did not have not so long ago.
What about autophogy? When you drink straight juice you let the bodies enery of always digesting food to go spend that energy to clear out damaged cells at a fater rate. Its regenerative detoxification and the body is self healing. You dont need science for something that is common sense. The body heals cuts and broken bones with a cast, why dont you think the body can heal internal problems with a juice fast?
These juice cleanses are amazing, They clean out your colon and have gotten people off meds. Obese people have lost a ton of weight, are off meds.
People just doubt the unknown
Agree to disagree… Your knowledge of the human body us limited by science (our smartness working against us 😇). We should be eating plants, mostly both wild and raw (only in forced scenarios cooked). Then no fasting (juice or not) nor cleansing woukd be necessary… You are protected by your hormones for now… Come back when ovet 40 and then see if eating whatever and critiquing fasting was a smart idea!!! 😎😊
have you heard of chelation? pectins in some fruits help remove heavy metals from the blood stream. i guess this video got a litle biased on someone assumtion, i have commented already on the fact that by feeding the organs responsible to clean the body you are effectively strengthen the cleansing of the body. what you think? not worth review ? or you just base your videos on one set of studies or papers?
They need to update there science information regarding this cleanse. Listen to this, but then listen to this https://youtu.be/dVArDzYynYc The science is catching up with clear, definitive, repeatable results regarding this "cleanse", or as I call it, a juice diet. It’ll change your life.
The stupid people never understand healthy lifestyle changes long term. Don’t know how to do the cleanse correct. Video doesn’t have all the facts either.
Juice fasting works, period. Science hasn’t probed other ways cause there isn’t any study on a long juice fast. Watch how many people have done a long juice fast and have healed from chronic diseases, have ditched their medications and have regained their health, and I personally know people that have experience dramatic improvements in their life. You wanna know if a juice fast works? Try it yourself. Stop blindly believing in science which is proven itself wrong over and over and will continue to do so. Doctors use to say smoking was good for your health and even milk and will prescribe drugs to the patients knowing damn well it’s going to have major side effects. The organs in the body stop working properly when you keep feeding them the wrong foods, not many people know how to eat properly. Processed foods, animal products and flours aren’t digested properly in the body. They ferment and root inside you. These "toxins" do stick in the body and that’s when disease happens. Look how the colon of a cancer patient or a diabetic person looks from the inside and you’ll see it’s full of waste.
If the body is not working as hard to digest and get rid of crap that isn’t great to consume large amounts of and instead having juice and working less hard to break things down, I think it definitely means I’m giving the body/digestive system a break and causing myself to lower cravings for crap. So it’s also still good then right?
Why are you talking about expensive juices? I just made an ausome can of juice which is not expensive….I’ll drink a cup tonight and tomorrow before I eat….ill let you know about the results
False, there is byproducts stuck to the walls of your intestine. That’s why when you see a GI doctor and they recommend a colonoscopy, they prescribe a gallon laxative to clean you out as much as possible so they can see the walls of your intestine.
Any change of thoughts post all the new research on fasting. Looks like all science is based on what we know so far and then saying, “oops that thing we said a few years ago, yeah that was based on our incomplete understanding wrapped around as universal facts ?” Don’t be so easy to dismiss dietary programs, you and me are not the same and everyone’s bodies are different, to the point that the general assumptions In this video cannot be applied.
Yeah…the key to your argument is that you’re saying a cleanse isn’t needed in a "healthy" digestive system. I’ve not done a juice fast or cleanse, but I’d argue to find me a human (or an American anyway) over the age of 20 with a "healthy" digestive system! 🤔 Look at the obesity rate, even among children. They didn’t get that way eating "healthy". Therefore, it stands to reason their digestive system (nor any other system) is healthy.
You also failed to mention a juice cleanse can be done at home with a juicer, hence that juice doesn’t need to be purchased from an outside company. You also failed to mention that roughly 80% of the juice should consist of vegetables with only 20% coming from fruit (if not less), nor did you explain the physiology behind it.
This videos dismisses juicing, whether alone or as part of the day’s intake along with food, as a fad diet and ridicules it as something unneeded or non-beneficial which it’s clearly the opposite.
Do the research from a nutritional and physiological standpoint and I think you’ll agree, there is nothing wrong with giving it a try.
I don’t think you can buy anything permanent from a juice cleanse, but I feel it makes you far more aware of subconscious food choices, snacking and can steer you towards making, consistently, healthier choices – and that is a lasting benefit.
So, all of those dozens of YouTubers making videos showing the weird looking solid crap they are passing while juicing are just lying? My experience so far on day 7 of a juice fast is: Lost 12 pounds. Blood pressure has returned to a more normal 119/78. Down from 147/95. And I check it several times a day. I have been on BP meds for over 10 years so that’s a good sign. I have not been hungry and I don’t lack energy. I still go to the gym 3 days a week. My guess is I am getting enough calories and nutrients. I will return to eating soon but will not go back to the same diet that raised my BP.
As I was reading the comments I just realized I was becoming more and more stupid people on heat haven’t even try it and their already experts on it juicing is not something new people really need to do their research before they talk out of their ass our body’s our design to detox on their own but sometimes need help if our body’s could heal them self we wouldn’t have 1 million people die of cancer every year
Thanks so much Hank, and the SciShow crew! I was actually thinking about doing this a few weeks ago, and now I think I won’t! Awesome video, like always!
What about celery juice diet? I’ve heard and gotten into a lot of arguments with idiots online selling it based of pseudoscience bs taking advantage of needy vulnerable people
Depending of the juices it can change some of the bacterial flora in the digestive tract, and provides lots of minerals and trace minerals. Possibly flush a few parasites through.
Really only useful if you eat undercooked meats, wild meats, or partially rotten food. Or have vitamin deficiencies.
Id say on this one, the fads dont properly explain, and neither did scischow.
I tried a juice diet a few times, i always felt really good afterward, but lost maybe 2 lb that came back after a week.
When it comes down to it, just about every weight-loss diet is simply “eat fewer calories”. It goes by a lot of different names…High fiber…Low carb…6 small meals a day…Juice cleanse…Keto…JUST EAT LESS FOOD!!

Lol y’all will think of any excuse not to be healthy!
So ridiculous.
You are so wrong, its much depende on how much toxic a person consumed!
He was actually incorrect on multiple points in this video and failed to point out certain very beneficial points such as vitamins etc.

Hi…
May I ask u about juice fasting.
My wife is in a state where she feels like can’t digest vegetable..
What she should do?

It makes sense if you drink veggie juice it should make you healthier. More nutrients more health
