I would love to see more doctors talk about nutrition and CKD earlier with patients. Eating right and living a healthy lifestyle can make a huge impact for so many in slowing the progression of CKD.

It is alarming to hear a Doctor strongly suggesting that 50-60% of caloric intake should be from carbohydrates. Best you, Doctor, drop broadcasting your current thinking and pay attention to the teachings of Dr’s Ken Berry, Eric Berg, Ekberg and Pradip Jamnadas…to name but a few!!

Nutrition facts aren’t always factual. If you see a label that says 0% trans fat you can be certain that it contains trans fats.

  29. High Oxalic Acid (Oxalate) Foods and the Dangers of Eating Them
    Mechanical Damage
Because oxalates are so abrasive, even the process of expelling them can cause damage.

Oxalate crystals are very abrasive and cause a tremendous amount of wear and tear.

When you have high circulating levels in your blood, they can be deposited in almost any organ in your body: thyroid, kidney, lymph nodes, intestines, eyes and skin .

These crystals are not something you want deposited in your organs. It’s basically like filling your body with tiny razor blades that can mechanically shred tissues.

    Biochemical Damage

Oxalates also work on a biochemical level. Smaller oxalate crystals called nano crystals can pass through your cell membranes.

When they get into the cell they inhibit enzymes that convert fuel into energy (such as biotin enzymes) These enzymes are critical for maintaining an energy balance and metabolic flexibility.

When it gets into the cell, it can poison and disrupt many processes

High oxalate levels can cause cells to swell up and burst
Nuclear shrinkage Depletes antioxidants like glutathione
Destruction of organelles Rupture of lysosomes leading to the release of destructive enzymes.

    High oxalate foods include:

    "Spinach"
Leafy greens like spinach contain many vitamins and minerals, but they’re also high in oxalates. A half-cup of cooked spinach contains 755 milligrams.

    Soy Products;

Products made from soybeans are excellent sources of protein and other nutrients, especially for people on a plant-based diet. However, they are also high in oxalates. A three-ounce serving of firm tofu has 235 milligrams, while 1 cup of soy milk or yogurt can have up to 336 milligrams of oxalates per serving.

    Almonds
Almonds are concentrated with a range of vitamins and minerals, yet, they are also high in oxalates. One ounce of almonds, or about 22 nuts, contains 122 milligrams of oxalates.

    Potatoes
A medium baked potato has 97 milligrams of oxalates per serving. Much of this content is in the potato’s skin, which contains high levels of nutrients like fiber, vitamin C, and B vitamins.

    Beets
Beets are an excellent source of nutrients like folate and manganese. Research shows their nitric oxide content helps lower your blood pressure. At 152 milligrams per cup, they’re also one of the vegetables highest in oxalates.

    Navy Beans
Legumes are a great way to add protein, fiber, and other nutrients to any meal. However, if you’re managing your oxalate levels, navy beans are on the high end with 76 milligrams per half-cup.

    Raspberries
Many fruits contain some oxalates, like avocados, oranges, and grapefruit, but raspberries are considered a high-oxalate food with 48 milligrams per cup.

    Dates
Dates are highly nutritious dried fruits often used as a sweetener in cooking and baking. Date consumption should be moderated, however, as they are high in sugar and concentrated with oxalates with one date containing 24 milligrams.

    Renal Failure
Over time, oxalates can damage the kidney enough to cause renal failure.
The kidney is the main organ focused on excretion, and the stress and inflammation from oxalates can overwhelm it. Patients with kidney stones have been shown to have decreased mitochondrial function in their white blood cells.

The increased mitochondrial damage and dysfunction produces even more free radicals that lead to DNA damage and cancer“Results of clinical and experimental studies show that renal epithelial exposure to high oxalate and crystals of CaOx/calcium phosphate (CaP) generates excess ROS, causing injury and inflammation” Which is ironic because many of these superfoods people eat are because they’re supposedly “antioxidants”. They’re really causing these “reactive oxygen species” and free radicals .

    Arthritis and Joint Pain
Joint pain is one of the most common symptoms of high oxalate consumption. Many people are unaware of how much oxalates contribute to these problems.

Oxalate crystals can actually lodge themselves into joints. If you remember the structure, they are very abrasive and can cause pain every time you move the joints.

    Inflammation
When oxalates are deposited into your organ tissues, they trigger inflammation. Specifically the NLPR-3 inflammasome .

NLPR-3 has been implicated in numerous chronic diseases, including cancer .
    Autism
This study found that patients with Autism had 3x the levels of oxalates in their blood than normal individuals.

    Skin and Eye Issues
High circulating oxalate levels leads to deposits in numerous organs throughout the body. Two of the most common are the skin and eyes .

Oxalates are abrasive causing skin and eye issues when deposited there.

I think animal fat n grass fed butter is more healthy than refined oils n fruit contains fructose too so eating only veg n fruits will cause more harm than benefit.

What’s wrong with butter other than that it’s a fat?

Medicinal effect of culture should be noted. South Asian foods are particularly loaded. Raw milk and milk products have ACE inhibitor. Potato doesn’t have to be the main ingredient. I use a cubic inch or two to enhance the taste. One of my three daily meals is my "all you can eat" salad – half a lettuce leaf, cubic inch cuke,2 each of cranberry, blueberry, cherry, table spoon of chopped cabbage, beats, olives, sliced red radish etc. One sardine or large shrimp or egg, slice of whole grain bread.frozen sliced veggies like okra and karela are precooked and convenient. My dessert is a third of banana, and a walnut mashed with a scoop of vanilla ice milk.

  39. Sugar and carbs are way more problematic for kidney and most other diseases than sodium. Plus a keto diet is a good idea for people with kidney disease and people on that diet need to make sure they get adequate sodium. It’s the added sugars and carbs that are the problem.

So I know what not to eat so what do I eat? Being told everyone is different and see a dietician may be good advise but not really helpful. The good thing is that protein is allowable!

  44. Sandy Coueffin says: September 3rd, 2022 at 3:09 pm

I have ankles again in just 6 months. Cut my meds in half, lost 10 lbs, eat mega veggies raw and or cooked. Mix onions mushrooms garlic all stirfried in good oil in with my black rice, black beans red peppers black sesame seeds. All colorful and dark. If you don’t eat meat with your vegetables it is good for kidneys. I’m not that bad off. Stage 3 54 went up to 80 and plan on getting up to 90 I hope by the summer. No Canola oil in my diet, actually they use to call it rape seed oil and changed the name because the women wouldn’t buy it. I use advocado, olive, sesame seed oils, organic grass fed butter. I use celtic salt and an organic no salt seasoning from costco, everybody loves it in my sour cream veggie dip. Dip is so good with tons of garlic and fresh dill and my no salt seasoning. I cook everthing from scratch. My Dr, just called with my results of my blood work. He said everything was better with my numbers ~ kidneys, blood sugar, thyroid and cholesterol. He doesn’t think it can be done with diet alone and I didn’t tell him I cut my water and BP pills in half. God Bless you all!
