Affirmations, eh?
"I am whole"
"i am Healthy"
I am filled with light
I live in Abundance
I am wise
I am EMPOWERED
Are you?
Because you say so? Because you repeat it?
Isn’t this just a mild form of self-hypnosis?
or "optimism gone wild"?
I don’t think it’s Biblical. I don’t remember Jesus or Peter or James or Mark ever repeating affirmations over and over like that. and think about this:
It isn’t ASKING GOD for anything. or Thanking him for anything.
It is basically just all about self and DECLARING "self" sorts of things. As if YOU have all the power. Big difference. Christians today, need to know more about "other paths" than just:
Jehovah’s Witnesses
Mormons
Law of Attraction or Christian Science. and there it stops. Few apologists talk about more than that. But there is sooo much more. And people don’t know. More apologists should provide info on:
UNITY SChool of Christianity (now called "unity") by Charles and Myrtile Fillmore in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. (Fillmore’s are now deceased but Unity still quite active).
What about Rosicrucians?
and THEOSOPHY
and Humanism
and Armstrong’s Worldwide Church of God and
Ernest Holmes and his Science of Mind (monotheism)
or Cosmic Consciousness/Mysticism. But none of these are mainstream Christian. Beware. A VERY useful book for Christians to have is "We Found Our Way Out" by Adair & Miller. (link follows: https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/we-found-our-way-out_james-r-adair_t-miller/2419269/?resultid=4efdd425-c910-4745-af51-106d65fb8889#edition=36466095&idiq=51547365
Those are prosperity type affirmations. No defense of those and I think I was caught up in some of that, too. Our brains do respond to what we say to ourselves. Thinking positively is differently than thinking positively about “ourselves”. As I get older, it is more and more apparent God knows what is best for us. When the Bible says “don’t do this”, it is because it will heartache, loss and sadness. He knew how our brains work and that’s why the Bible says rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks in all circumstances. Prayer is an affirmation (ie what we are telling ourselves) and having an attitude of joy and gratitude shapes what we let our “committee” tell our brain.
Hey there! The thing with affirmations and how they’re used in therapy is not at all related to "manifesting" or anything like that. They’re used to combat negative thoughts and usually aren’t supposed to state unrealistic things, but rather realistic facts about oneself. It shouldn’t be "I am kind, I am amazing, I don’t have to change" (all of which, like you said, the person probably doesn’t believe, and also are just too prideful and not realistic), it should be "I am capable of becoming more kind" (true, realistic, doesn’t put oneself on a pedestal or drag one down)
. I’m not religious, but I’d like to know your perspective on how to balance your issues with saying "I am worthy" without going into the dark territory of "I am worthless, unlovable, I should just die". Are you saying that being unworthy should make someone feel grateful instead of ashamed? Asking because I immediately thought of young girls who are growing up on websites like tiktok, where people use practically unnoticeable filters to drastically change the size of their waste, or their jaws, or nose, or eyes, or all of the above. These girls see this and are taught they aren’t good enough and that they have to starve themselves or get plastic surgery to be worthy or considered beautiful.
Where does your perspective fit into this, and what do you think the answer to this is? I can only assume you’d probably agree that "get plastic surgery to have a 20 inch waist or you’re not worthy of love and acceptance" is not a great message to send to girls and women. Likewise, there’s other societal standards aimed at men that aren’t healthy either.
Edit: I know you touched on it in the video, I’d just like to hear more, if that’s okay with you.
Affirmations ARE intentional self delusion. They are false self-worth, which is why they cannot work long-term. I have always hated the idea that "a long as you feel good, that’s all that matters".
New follower here, and I gotta say what I love about your content is that it makes me want to stop whatever I’m doing in order to read and study Scriptures. Thank you for doing what you do!
I think it is helpful to have affirmations to stop thinking negative thoughts, but affirmations in God. For example, I am forgiven by God. I am loved by God. I say this because I know someone who walks around depressed and saying how wretched they are, like Paul. They seem to have no joy and to me, are living in constant condemnation. To them this is how a Christian should be.
I think you can say those same affirmations but you definitely need to add “through Christ.” I think it’s definitely okay to say “I’m loved through Christ” or “I am beautiful through Christ.” Take this with a grain of salt I’m still learning the Bible. But I believe it gives the power back to God rather than yourself. Although saying “I am worthy of money through Christ” doesn’t work at all. You can only serve one or the other 😅
It is so hard because I do struggle with anxious thoughts but also drawing the line between new-age “self-love” affirmations verses bible verses to combat those anxious thoughts that I struggle with. That’s why for a while I haven’t even realized that I had issues to self-esteem (not in the sense of prideful, but lack of confidence if that makes sense). I know I struggle with this so I have been going to counseling for this and learning a bit of this anxiousness, to the point I just freeze up and panic. Knowing how God created you, the need for a savior, etc. is so much more of a confidence booster than focusing on myself
My mother is going through therapy for her trauma and all the therapists she has seen are practising this kind of thing. She likes it so much that she wants to be a coach herself. She goes on webinars, and I overheard 10 seconds of one and I heard the words "law of attraction" and my heart almost stopped. She needs help, but not this. I really don’t want her to get lost, and my father only says "God will look after her". God will *deal* with her, but this may not be in the way he thinks.
To all who read this comment, would you mind praying for my mother? Thank you, and God bless. <3
For quite some time, I believed I wasn’t disciplined enough that’s why they weren’t "transforming "my mindset…I decided to quit them but I still believed it was "my" problem but looking back now, all I needed to do was to seek Jesus Christ.
I think I get it now when Jesus says "narrow is the way". An example could be that the Bible says we should think on what is right and noble and just. However if we go too far we end up with toxic positivity. Or anothwr one could be how God gives us the grace to be imperfect and make mistakes but as St. Paul said we shouldn’t abuse God’s grace and mercy.
I’ve used subliminal affirmations to help me stop procrastinating, help focus, concentration, and discipline. I don’t use them unless I’m absolutely stuck. I’ve occasionally used hypnosis. I’ve always been concerned if this was wrong to do.
I am so glad the Lord lead me here. It fits in with every thing I am studying at the moment. As a chronically sick person, with an invisible illness, positive affirmation has caused me a great deal of condemnation from and within the church. God is currently teaching me to stand up for myself honestly and be more assertive when I cannot do things. People would say, I feel you should step out and do so and so and then your healing will manifest. All that manifested was exhaustion, frustration and condemnation. Thank you. X
There is something I learned in therapy called toxic positivity. Therapy has just shown me how much I need to FACE REALITY and deal with what is actually happening! Your grounded teachings are helping me understand Jesus so much more. Thank you!
I was saved out of Wicca and have just discovered your videos. I’m constantly saying, “yes”! You are always so spot on and it’s very encouraging to hear someone else talk about what I also discern in the modern American church. There are such a vast amount of “worship” (so called) songs that sing, “I, I, I, me, me, me”! Worship isn’t about us but about Him.
Once you received Jesus and are born again, aren’t you then a new creation? How are we saved if we’re still in our sins? I think the difference between New Age thinking and Christianity is that New Agers want the benefit of salvation without repentance and accepting Christ as Lord and Saviour.
I love my practice of reading my 3×5 cards each day. These have Bible verses, wisdom, kindness and good advice. It’s like a mental refocus on right thinking. It’s easy for me to focus on defeating thoughts and get down right ugly. 😕
Melissa what do you think of Samuel Rodriguez he has a viedo on Name it.. I use to watch him but after watching and learning from you, I am now walking in Faith but not using Name it.
Hallelujah! This was so helpful. I have often asked myself, where is that line? And I have caught myself thinking positive things about myself and right away thinking, I am all of these things because of God’s endless and perfect mercy and grace not just because I am saying them out loud.
Thank You Father for confirming my desires to please You thru my sister Melissa. And thank you Melissa for being that willing vessel He wanted to use to let me know He hears me and knows the desires of my heart to be in His will. Blessings to you.
What she is saying is true there are affirmations that have you thinking that you’re a god. That being said!! God DID make us creators in our own right it doesn’t mean we are gods though but the fact that we are phenomenal creations by the divine—we are a lot more capable than we think and God definitely wants us to maximize our potential in this world. The fact that our bodies is the temple of Christ says something too about us too. I listen to affirmations and am not a new age Christian—I fight temptations everyday and give glory to God despite the fact that I’m not perfect I know I’m not put on this earth for no reason I have a purpose. Affirmations in the lens of scripture gives me the willpower to have faith in myself
Not that positive/optimistic thought is bad. God would have suffered the passion for you and you alone. His love is so great. So we should have a sense of appropriate self worth.
Romans 12
9. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
This video is very helpful! There is perspective and balance to these things. Paul made it clear to have no confidence in the flesh! Philippians 3:3.
The only way I can do anything is if it’s God’s will and in His strength. I know He enables us to live, breath and have our being, to work, to earn, to thrive, to give, to live in light of the truth and produce good works prepared in advance by Him. All by His Spirit but boy am I a wretched sinner and not sure anyone knows that better than God, myself and my husband and family. I am however encourage as my husband reminds me regularly: "We’re not what we should be but neither are we what we used to be". Praise God for that!
An appropriate counter being to also avoid the "negative affirmations" as they are unbiblical too like "I can’t do anything right" instead of "God give me wisdom to do this well. Or "there is nothing good about x,y,z" instead of "God has blessed us with x and given us grace to trust Him as we navigate y".
The goal must be to keep the power attributed to God while we are working for His glory. I deal with a lot of Debbie- Downers who correctly agree with the video that affirmations are wrong, but miss the counterpart of embracing the joy God gives us in trials and in blessings.
Hi Melissa Ive been really wondering if what my church is doing biblical. You’ve been familiar with new age and how certain "christians" practice it in a way clocking it using the bible. They tell us to declare scriptures over our life and the more we declare those the more they get into our hearts. Would u say in a way these are being surrounded by new age practices thats just being labeled as biblical just cause they use scriptures? They make us declare these for ex (i am the head and not the tail, I am a child of God, I’ve been forgiven, Ive been delivered from the power of darkness). Even like believe it as if youve received it. I do believe meditating on it is biblical and thanking God for it but what about declaring them? I got pretty iffy with that church cause they said I command you to blah blah in Jesus name… TO GOD? Like what even…
I experienced exactly what you said about that strong yoke of believing I was manifesting everything that was in my life. I spent so much money I didn’t have attending workshops and classes, buying books, and applying the “prosperity principles” just trying to figure out what I was doing wrong to cause all of the bad things in my life. As a Christian (will never stop praising our Lord for pulling me out of that deception!), I struggled so much to communicate to my therapist that affirmations like you were describing are not helpful at all. I wonder if so many therapists are pushing affirmations because of subtle New Age influence…
Great video. Thanks Melissa!
Ask God what He thinks, He will answer you!!!!
Praise God! this was a very balanced perspective. Thank you for this.

I LOVE how you just nail it every time!😂. You have a tremendous gift for making Christian concepts understandable. Thank you!❤️
Thank you for this video! Can you expand on the theme of subliminals and scripting which are some tools used for practising LOA?
The story about the palsy lady sounds like a scene from seinfeld, ngl
"Mental sorcery" – that’s a great phrase to describe affirmations
What about frequencies? 528hz? 432hz?
Yeah you shouldn’t put yourself down
Love the way you do presentations! I am a new subscriber so enjoy getting to view your videos. Bless you!

The lady with the stroke was right. Believe that mountain be be moved and it shall move. We are to pray as our prayer has come to pass whole we pray.

‼️Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day. If you want to be saved, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour ‼️
Things manifest in the spirit first then. In the natural.

I’ve not even watched this video but already it sounds WRONG!!!
The law of attraction and self affirmations is a form of mental slavery.
I’ve used subliminal affirmations to help me stop procrastinating, help focus, concentration, and discipline. I don’t use them unless I’m absolutely stuck. I’ve occasionally used hypnosis. I’ve always been concerned if this was wrong to do.

Hi Melissa! Where you quoted Galatians 3 22-24 in this video did you mean Ephesians 4: 22-24?
Once you received Jesus and are born again, aren’t you then a new creation? How are we saved if we’re still in our sins? I think the difference between New Age thinking and Christianity is that New Agers want the benefit of salvation without repentance and accepting Christ as Lord and Saviour.
Hey! Would you be able to look into the DHT by Curry Blake ministry and make a video about it whatever comes to mind? You’re videos are so helpful
